Bio

On 1 July 2014, Dr. Margaret C. Wilmoth was appointed the Deputy Surgeon General for Mobilization, Readiness, and Army Reserve Affairs.

Dr. Wilmoth received her Ph.D. in Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania. She also earned a Master of Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College, and a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Dr. Wilmoth is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing. She is an alumna of the Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellowship.

With over 40 years of professional experience, and 35 years of military service, Major General Wilmoth has served in a variety of positions within the public and academic setting. Her academic positions include Dean and Professor, Byrdine F. Lewis School of Nursing and Health Professions, Georgia State University. Here she was responsible for reforming and restructuring the school. The School of Nursing and Health Professions expanded programmatic offerings, grew their research portfolio, enhanced outreach to alumni and in the community. Dr. Wilmoth’s research area of expertise is in psychosocial oncology and military psychological health. As a tenured professor Dr. Wilmoth has held positions at University of North Carolina at Charlotte, University of Kansas, Central Missouri State and the University of Delaware. She has been a member of the Government Affairs Committee, American Association of Colleges of Nursing, chaired the Military/Veterans Health Expert Panel of the American Academy of Nursing and served on the National Council of Nurse Education and Practice, Health Resources and Services Administration, Department of Health and Human Services. Dr. Wilmoth has published over 60 print and electronic publications.

Prior to her current position, Major General Wilmoth’s military assignments included serving as the Assistant for Mobilization and Reserve Affairs, Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense, Health Affairs and as Commanding General, 332nd Medical Brigade. She served as the deputy commander for the 81st Regional Support Group and as commander, 5th Medical Group and 312th Field Hospital. Major General Wilmoth is a member of the Order of Military Medical Merit.
